Elettaria cardamom

Cardamom are dried seed capsule of small group of spices or plants belonging to family Zingiberaceae which contain seeds possesing a pleasant characteristic aroma and flavor. They are broadly divided into two categories:

• Small Cardamom: Popularly known as Chhoti elaichi or True Cardamom. It is also known as "Queen of spices".
• Large Cardamom: Badi elaichi or Black Cardamom.

Though the size of seed and anatomy of Amomum and Elettaria cardamom are similar. But, the fruit of Amomum are much larger in size in comparison with Elettaria cardamom and hence its easy to distinguish between them.

Both forms of Cardamom are used to flavor foods and drinks, as cooking spices. They are also used as a medicine.

Green cardamom is used to treat digestive disorders and infections in teeth and gums, as an antidote for both snake and scorpion venom, also used to treat stomach aches, constipation ,dysentry etc.

Green cardamom is often used in Indian Sweets and in Masala Chai (Tea). Whereas Black cardamom is used in garam masala.
